Setting up an eSIM for the first time takes less than five minutes. This guide covers the process for all major device types.
Before You Begin
Check these first:
- Device compatibility: iPhone XS+, Samsung S20+, Pixel 3+, or other eSIM-capable device
- Unlocked device: Carrier-locked phones may not support eSIM even if the hardware does
- Internet connection: Wi-Fi recommended for the initial activation download
- Your eSIM QR code: From SIMPal or your chosen provider
iPhone Setup
- Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM
- Tap Use QR Code and scan your code
- Tap Continue through the confirmation prompts
- Label the eSIM (e.g. "Japan Trip") and tap Continue
- Set default lines: keep your physical SIM for calls, set the eSIM as your data line
Samsung Galaxy Setup
- Settings → Connections → SIM card manager → Add mobile plan
- Tap Scan carrier QR code
- Follow the prompts to confirm and activate
- In SIM card manager, assign the eSIM as your mobile data line
Google Pixel Setup
- Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM (+)
- Tap Download a SIM instead?
- Scan your QR code
- Set the eSIM as your preferred data connection
After Activation: Check These Settings
- Data roaming off on home SIM — prevents accidental roaming charges on your home carrier plan
- Mobile data set to eSIM — confirms data is routing through the local plan
- iMessage/WhatsApp tied to home number — so contacts can still reach you normally
Activation Didn't Work?
Most failures are caused by one of these:
- Weak Wi-Fi during download — move closer to your router and retry
- QR code already used — each code is single-use; contact support for a replacement
- Carrier lock — check if your device is unlocked via Settings → General → About (iPhone) or contact your home carrier
